Clean your stainless steel teapot

DSCF5060

So I’ve had this wonderful teapot for the last three years or so, but the stove top has left it covered in grease and grime. I tried scrubbing it down with a damp brillo pad earlier this month, but it scratched the surface. At any rate, it was still overdue for a deep cleaning.

I thought this would be a great opportunity to test Bar Keeper’s Friend on stainless steel. This stuff is really highly recommended and is supposed to clean and polish stainless, ceramic, porcelain, countertops and copper. Let’s give it a shot.

The directions for Bar Keeper's Friend, (now called BKF, by myself at least) are to wet the surface to be cleaned and sprinkle it on, then scrub with a rag or sponge. You need to rinse it within one minute of application, so it pays to work in small spots. Then wipe dry.

The BKF did a great job cutting through the grease and grime, but I see lots of scratches on the surface of the kettle. Now, I don’t want to point fingers unnecessarily, because I know the brillo pad scratched the surface already. Not sure, at this point, whether the Bar Keeper’s Friend added to the scored surface. I don’t think the soft cotton rag I used contributed negatively.

I know I did not use the brillo pad on the bottom of the kettle, especially in the recessed ring around the outside of the bottom. However, I see the Bar Keeper's Friend treatment did leave a slightly burnished surface on this recessed ring. Like I said, this product is well spoken of, so I don't want to make any conclusions as to whether it will dull your stainless appliances and cookware, considering my highly flawed testing procedure. But this test does bring to light some common sense we often forget: when using a new product on a new surface, remember to test on an inconspicuous area.
